Scott Engler: What Do We Do When We Don't Know What To Do?

“I have to let myself off the hook, knowing I might miss something, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to do this work” - Ray Castellino, private conversation with Scott Engler

No matter how much we train for the professional therapeutic work we offer as bodyworkers and trauma therapists, there are often points with a client when we don’t know what to do, what our next step should be. Shame, self-judgement, and fear may arise, interrupting our ability to remain present with our client and open to the therapeutic process as it unfolds.

The expectation we have on ourselves to KNOW what to do can get in the way of our presence with our clients. Of course our trainings are appropriate. We need tools in our toolkits. We also need support for not-knowing, for allowing this wide-open space that can show up in the middle of a session.

Scott will outline his experience with this empty space and offer how he finds support when this occurs. This will include reinforcing the fundamental somatic tools he draws on from 30 years of meditation, Aikido and conscious dance practice.
